Description

The original name of Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah is Pasar Besar Buluh Kubu. However, it was renamed to this name by the former Menteri Besar of Kelantan, the late Tuan Guru Dato ‘Nik Abdul Aziz Bin Nik Mat as a sign of respect to the women, as the majority of its traders are women. The name Siti Khadijah was also taken in conjunction with the name of the wife of the Prophet Muhammad SAW who was also a successful woman trader.

A unique sight in the markets in Kelantan is the traders who on average consist of women who are known for their interest in business.

The market has 4 floors and is octagonal in shape. The ground floor is dedicated to wet goods such as fish, vegetables, chicken and so on. The 1st floor is allocated for dried food items such as serunding, which is a very famous Kelantan food. There are also Ayam percik, ikan percik, nasi kerabu, nasi berlauk, nasi dagang, laksam and somtam which are among the most “famous” foods for the people of Kelantan. Kelantan traditional cakes such as kuih tahi itik, akak, jala mas, buah tanjung, serabe, tepung pelita, and various other kuih are also sold here. While the 2nd and 3rd floors are for non -food items.

Nama asal Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah ialah Pasar Besar Buluh Kubu. Walau bagaimanapun ia telah ditukar namanya kepada nama ini oleh Mantan Menteri Besar Kelantan iaitu Allahyarham Tuan Guru Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz Bin Nik Mat sebagai tanda penghormatan kepada kaum Hawa, memandangkan majoriti peniaganya terdiri daripada golongan wanita. Nama Siti Khadijah ini juga diambil bersempena nama isteri Nabi Muhammad SAW yang juga merupakan seorang peniaga wanita yang berjaya.

Satu pemandangan yang unik di pasar-pasar di Kelantan ialah peniaganya yang rata-rata terdiri daripada kaum wanita yang terkenal dengan minat berniaga .

Pasar ini mempunyai 4 tingkat dan berbentuk segi lapan. Tingkat bawah dikhususkan untuk barangan basah seperti ikan, sayur-sayuran, ayam dan sebagainya. Tingkat 1 pula diperuntukkan kepada barangan makanan kering seperti serunding, iaitu sejenis makanan Kelantan yang sangat terkenal. Juga terdapat Ayam percik, ikan percik, nasi kerabu, nasi berlauk, nasi dagang, laksam dan somtam merupakan antara makanan yang paling “tersohor” bagi rakyat negeri Kelantan. Kuih tradisional Kelantan seperti kuih tahi itik, akak, jala mas, buah tanjung, serabe, tepung pelita, dan pelbagai lagi kuih lain yang juga dijual di sini. Manakala tingkat 2 dan 3, untuk barangan bukan makanan.
