Bekas pemimpin Al-Arqam, Ashaari Muhammad meninggal dunia di Hospital Ipoh Specialist Center pada jam 2.10 petang kerana jangkitan paru-paru.
Menurut Utusan Malaysia Online, jenazah beliau akan dibawa ke Rembau, Negeri Sembilan selepas solat jenazah di Ipoh.
Ashaari yang juga Pengerusi Syarikat Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd berada di Ipoh dalam siri lawatan ke rangkaian perniagaan syarikat berkenaan.
Sementara itu, Bernama memetik seorang kakitangan syarikat berkenaan, Marzuki Hussein bahawa jenazah Ashaari yang dipanggil Abuya oleh para pengikutnya telah dibawa ke kampung asalnya di Kampung Pilin, Rembau, untuk dikebumikan.
Katanya, Ashaari berada di Ipoh selepas melawat Thailand dan Kedah dan dikejarkan ke hospital Isnin lalu selepas mengadu sakit dada.
Jurucakap hospital berkenaan sementara itu berkata Ashaari meninggal dunia pada 2.10 petang tadi.
"Ini siri lawatan biasanya ke rangkaian perniagaan Global Ikhwan," kata Marzuki kepada Bernama selepas jenazah Allahyarham Ashaari disembahyangkan di sebuah banglo milik syarikat itu di Ipoh.
Marzuki berkata rumah berkenaan adalah rumah tamu syarikat berkenaan.
Rombongan yang membawa jenazah Allahyarham ke Rembau berlepas dari rumah berkenaan pada kira-kira 5.30 petang tadi.
Kira-kira 200 pengikut Allahyarham turut berada di rumah berkenaan.
Kumpulan Al Arqam diharamkan oleh Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan pada Ogos 1994.
Apabila ajaran Al-Arqam diharamkan, Ashaari ditahan mengikut Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA) dari 2 hingga 24 Sept 2004 sebelum ditahan mengikut Akta Kediaman Terhad di Rawang dan Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan selama 10 tahun.
Al-Arqam diasaskan oleh Ashaari juga dikenali sebagai Jamaah Aurad Muhammadiah dan aktivitinya berada di kemuncak sekitar lewat 80-an dan 90-an dan dilaporkan mempunyai kira-kira 10,000 pengikut.
Kumpulan itu dilaporkan menyebarkan kegiatan dakwah Islam melalui bidang pendidikan, penerangan, penerbitan, perusahaan,perniagaan, perubatan, dan pertanian.
Ashaari menimbulkan kontroversi kerana pernah mendakwa beliau berjumpa dengan Nabi Muhammad SAW secara sedar dan meramalkan dirinya akan menjadi perdana menteri Malaysia selepas Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
